suse linux 10 oss compiling error

I have always been the neighborhood computer guru but recently linux users are starting to ask me questions I have trouble answering. I can't even answer most questions myself. Anyway, I have a suse 10 linux box that does not create a "make" file after doing config. It goes threw a long config prosses (that doesn't take very long) and then ends with a simple error that some directory can't be found or something like that I can boot it up and coppy the log here. I'm just checking to see if this is something that can be fixed by me. I have an expertease in windows and barly can use the terminal to navigate to a drive. I'm using the gnome desktop environment. I have installed all the C compilers from the distros package. Please help I have no idea what to do! If you need the log file I will post it right now I got to go help my dad pick out a computer to have me install linux on it but he's going to want to play mp3 files and I need to be able to install the gstreamer mp3 plug-in.

make file works

configure and make file seem to work. I can't get it to "make install" though. I have the root password also. To install xine-lib-1.1.1 wich i think is what i need to watch wmv and listen to mp3s? If i run it from the reg console it says ...."cannot creat regular file 'usr/local/man/man1/xine-config.1"... and under that it says permission denyed. I can't figure out how to navigate to my users home directory from "super user mode" console also called root console. My username is david and the folder the stuff is /home/david/xine-lib-1.1.1 will running it in super user mode solve the permission denyed ?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!!??!!? and if so how do i navigate!!! and yes i'm a noob and i typed this in under 10 seconds.

Xine will play anything as long as you have the right codecs. I would consider xine as a multimedia player and xmms as a music player. On my laptop, I use kaffeine (a xine frontend) to play almost everthing.

You must install mc (midnight commander) with yast. It look like the old norton commander on dos. The navigation on the console is much easier with it and it can do much more.

You can use apt-get at the place of yast.
http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm/

The advantage of apt-get is at you will get other sources as the SuSE ones. Suse have a broken multimedia support because of legal consideration. At least up to suse 9.3, i don't know for open suse because I am still using 9.3 and switching to debian-DeMuDi at the same time.
You want install Synaptic too, it is a good frontend for apt-get.
