suse booting time???

I don't know anyone else who has linux - so I could bug them with questions - therefore I endup using this open-end interface.

I simply love linux, my first a suse. Yet, I have two major thumbs down for booting time, and the notorious staroffice.

One. the booting time hangs for a long time when it's doing 'hardware scan' after which it normally loads the login screen. something I could do about shortening the scanning time?

Two. the font representation onscreen of Staroffice is simply put horrible. the default font times is overlaping each letter making it impossible to type and read. what's the deal with that??

please help!!

entirely grateful,

What SuSE linux are you using?

Booting time can be reduce with a good selection of boot manager and kernel.

I don't use StarOffice but on OpenOffice these are what I did:
Update freetype
Update freetype2
Copy windows ttf from /windows/C/WINDOWS/Fonts to
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype

Go to http://www.cs.mcgill.ca/~dchest/xfthack/
Follow the instruction.

Have a lot of fun!

thanks for replying. I will work around this office problem. I also have just downloaded openoffice and will check it out and upgrade its ttfonts.
about SuSE, I have to check it out. I don't have the pc with me as I am typing this. But if my memory completely failed me, it's a 8.0 (or 8.1) OUT OF THE BOX - got it from CompUSA.
... what's with that long hardware scan? this is a laptop, vaio, and maybe it tries to identify parts which cannot find drivers for. and no, not every component works, such as the internal winmodem and the DVD player. Just hooked up a HP printer, and seemed to work okay. tried a compaq pci lan card, but it did not read it. didn't quire work to fix it either.
I am getting a debian soon. will see how that works.

* peace
