Suse 9 2.6.4 - issue starting services

Hi
have just taken the plunge to the latest stable 2.6. All just about ok, except I get a message informing me that certain services (cron, sshd, acpid + others have failed). The all work fine with my hand rolled 2.4 kernel.

The strange thing is that the services are actually running if I check i.e (rccron status).
I've googled a fair amount for the past hours and really see anything that fixes the problem.

Some info below:

grep cron /var/log/boot.msg:
Starting CRON daemon<notice>startproc: execve (/usr/sbin/cron) [ /usr/sbin/cron ], [ CONSOLE=/dev/console TERM=linux SHELL=/bin/sh progress=12 INIT_VERSION=sysv init-2.82 REDIRECT=/dev/tty1 COLUMNS=118 PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sb in:/usr/bin vga=0x317 RUNLEVEL=3 PWD=/ PREVLEVEL=N LINES=38 HOME=/ SHLVL=2 splas h=silent sscripts=15 _=/sbin/startproc DAEMON=/usr/sbin/cron ]
<notice>exit status of (lisa cron) is (0 7)
Failed services in runlevel 3: acpid cron

rccron status:
laptop:~ # rccron status
Checking for Cron: running

Any help appreciated.Cheers,L
