Suse 9.1 Professional DVD Playback ?!?

Hi There.

I'm a complete n00b if it comes to Linux. At this point I'm trying to install Ogle with DVD support under Suse 9.1 Professional. I Installed the following packages:

a52dec-0.7.4-7.1.fc2.fr.i386.rpm
a52dec-devel-0.7.4-7.1.fc2.fr.i386.rpm
libdvdcss-1.2.8-1.i386.rpm
libdvdread-0.9.4-ogle1.i386.rpm
ogle-0.9.2-ogle1.i586.rpm

did I forget one?

So What is the problem? Ogle starts up fine (I'v added a shortcut to the K Menu) When the disk starts up, I can only see the menu. When I try to play the DVD mu screen goes black. So still no DVD support!!!!! Furthermore I only have a video screen and no Control Centre. So I can't switch sounds/subtitles either!

I'v already activated my DMA mode. I'm working on an Intel Pentium 4, 3000 Mhz, 1024 MB, NVIDIA GF6500SE 128 MB (with driver installed of course), Creative SB Live! And a Pioneer DVR-106D DVD+/-RW Drive!

Maybe it's because of this. When I installed my system I got the following Error:

FOUT

WARNING: This system has at least one hard disk with a RAID configuration sold by the BIOS as RAID that is in fact a software RAID. We detected the following drives to be part of such RAID:

/dev/hda /dev/hdb

The Linux Kernel 2.4 spported some of these systems (Like Promise FastTrack and HighPoint RocketRaid) The Linux kernel 2.6 does not support them at all

If you do an installation onto these disks your RAID configuration will be lost! have a look at ********* howto migrite to a Linux Software Raid

I've got several disks in my system:
2x Maxtor 200 GB ATA
2x Maxtor 120 GB SATA

The system is installed onto one of the SATA disks, no configuration was lost and no data was lost!

I've tried to install Mandrake 10.0 Discovery onto my system, this wasn't possible because it freezes while booting, that's the reason why I've bought Suse 9.1 Professional (too)

I hope anybody can help me out! and please don't mind my grammer, because I'm Dutch!

Wouter

don't know if this will help, but open up yast and go to the software instllation menu.. Seard for DVD, and make sure everything listed is installed. Looks like you may not have libdvdplay installed.

and if you don't mind using Xine, check this out:

http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/

grab these RPM's and follow the easy instructions onscreen, and everything should work just fine. Just dont install the Xine components from YAST, use these instead.

hope this helps.

i think if you just open up yast and do the update thing. suse 9.1 doesnt come with dvd support but you can get it from the update. it was some sort of legal thing. i dont think any distro comes with dvd support.

and please don't mind my grammer, because I'm American!

Don't you need libdvdnav too, or is that built in to the Ogle engine?

you need that too. Grab every lib file listed in Yast when you search for "dvd". You don;'t "need" the devel files, but i usually install them anyway, since they dont take much room.

Ok i'v installed:
libdvdplay 1.0.1-147.i586
libdvdplay-devel 1.0.-147.i586
libdvdnav-0.1.9-0.lvn.2.2.i386.rpm
libdvdnav-devel-0.1.9-0.lvn.2.2.i386.rpm

This worked, but still some of the DVD's don't play. ( I've encountered one: Torque and The Passion Of Christ)

anybody knows what's that about?

sorry for the delay. I'll borrow my sister's "Passion" CD and test it out and see what i get.

Do you get an error message or anything, or it simply wont play?

Thanks,

On a side note, where did you get "The Passion of Christ" from on August 23rd, as it just came out yesterday, August 31? At least in the USA, that is..

not suggesting its pirated or anything, but does this DVD work in a standalone DVD? IS it actually a DVD or a VCD, a rip or something else? keep in mind, i'm not accusing, i'm just trying to get as much information as i can to help you out.

Suse 9.1/2 users and DVD playback

Here's a solutions for installing a dvd player under Suse 9.1 and 9.2

remove all existing Xine packages with Yast and set them on "taboo" (never install)

Go to the Yast software section and click "change source of installation"

now go to the add section --> http --> server name:
packman.iu-bremen.de --> directory on server: suse/9.1 (for suse 9.2: /suse/9.2 naturally...)

now go to the add/remove software section of yast: search for Xine (dvd player with menu support) or mplayer (dvd player with no menu support)

Now Yast will install DVD players that can play all DVD's!! These will come from the packman source and will complete auto-compile

Hope this helps!!!!!!
