SuSE 9.1 CUPS + USB printing problem

I am getting /seriously/ miffed with this now. For some days now I've not been able to print on my primary box that /has/ been working all fine and dandy and has suddenly stopped!

No changes made by me that would directly affect it, so WTF is it not now working?! I've already deleted and re-added the queue, the driver, CUPS itself and /still/ nothing.

An extract from CUPS' error log, below, indicates a problem exists but I am unable to decipher it further -- clues/answers gratefully accepted!

How /do/ I turn the LogLevel to "debug"?

AAAAAAARRRGGGHHHH!

Do you have any paper in your tray?

I have a lot of paper in my ONLY place to have paper for my printer, but I still get the line "Media tray empty!"

Heh, yeah, I saw that too and yes, being the dutiful novice SysAdmin I am, I checked anyway.

The key issue for me here is that it was working absolutely fine and [*proud*] I even got my g/f's Windoze box printing to it over the LAN.

Therefore, I'm jiggered if I can figure out where the problem resides as I've not directly changed anything I perceive to be related to it.

Lots of stuff has undoubtedly changed by virtue of it being set to auto-update but to have to try and troubleshoot that can of worms is even more daunting.

Rik.

Wikkus, did you evr solve the problem? I have the same problem also with an Epson printer - new install of Suse 9.1 running CUPS and after 1 week it died never to come back dispite having reinstalled all printing software and deleted all conf files. Actually the sound system has done the same - any ideas?

I had similar problems (my explanation of problem is in this thread) printing to my Epson Stylus Color printers (two of them) after upgrading to SuSE 9.1. I downgraded to 9.0, and printing has been perfect.

Okay, here's what I did to solve my problem with my HP OfficeJet K60 printer, since it looks like it's the same problem. First, I did the work-around by just using parallell, and that worked, but for some reasony family insisted on USB anyway. *Grrr*
run, as root,
Code:
ptal-init setup
I had to have HPOJ-0.91 installed, maybe there's something similar that works for your printer. From what I understand, ptal-init setup creates and installs the proper drivers. Then you just have to choose the proper drivers in CUPS and all works dandy.

Heya, Steve.

Coincidentally, after a two week break to Spain on my motorcycle which involved minimal PC activity (GPS updates, only!), I returned on Sunday and fired up the boxen to check what was going on and had an email notification that you'd replied to this thread

Before playing with my own machine, I had to apply a couple of updates to the firewall and a check to see if the creaky old Proliant test machine would cough into life. I then hit the go-button on my main PC.

There were a few patches waiting for me, one of which was an updated kernel (the -226 release).

Duly applied it and restarted and bingo! it works.

Go figure...

Hope the "solution" is as straightforward for you.

Rgds, Rik.

Hi Rik,
aha - Spain, I live there half the year in El Andalucia, wonderful place and great for bikes as long as you manage to stay on them and not under them but I digress. Thanks for replying and thanks also to the other replies - all greatfully accepted HOWEVER - as of yet no solution. Kernel updated - everything updated but still no sound card (it was there) and no CUPS - If I try to add a printer via the web interface it wants an admin username and password - where the **&!!* do you set that? nothing in the conf file. The CUPS server sometimes runs at startup sometimes not and I have to manually start it, Localhost:631 sometimes connects sometimes not. The firewall seems to gum the whole thing up so thats been switched off. I get "client string too long for server" CUPS errors if I try to use YAST to configure the printer queue or Client cannot autheticate errors. The suggestion to downgrade to 9.0 might be worth a try but I only have a bought version 9.1 pro so how do I do that? From reading around we are not the only ones to suffer from 9.1istus disease but what to do? Linux refuse to talk to me unless I cough up $39 every 20 mins as apparently printing and sound are not covered by their 90 day support - bah humbug - well I`m normally a Mac OSX man so I thought Linux would be vaguely similar but it seems like a clunky mess to me at the moment - It trashed my Windows installation when I added it - at least the Windows partion is there but neither Grub or Lilo will boot to it, it wouldnt talk to my scanner or SCSI card (this is a new 2.6 Ghz Small Form Factor machine I wonted to use in the studio as a simple admin machine, and now it gives on on printing and sound for no descernable reason - I mean what can a poor man do? Can I deinstall the buggar and start again without having to format the disk - I took the Red pill to see how far the rabbit (penguin) hole goes and I seem to be under machine attack - Ideas are most welcome.

I am glad to see that a problem actually got SOLVED here on LinuxQuestions. I posted a similar thread to no avail - but then stumbled across something interesting:

I was getting a "Media Tray Empty" error on my Epson Stylus Color 580 after moving from windows to fedora. Eventually, I gave up on it until yesterday, when I plugged it back into a windows box, and it turned out that it was out of black ink.

I think that "Media Tray Empty" might be a mistaken error code for "you're out of ink". This particular model of printer will not allow the printer to function without adequate ink, and this explains why it didn't work for me.

Hope this helps someone.
