For the moment I installed Kanotix 64 bit today as a dual boot and it installs and runs fine with all the hardware recognized properly. If you can think of any other fix please let me know.

Thanks again for your efforts and help.

Talk about timing. I was typing in my reply to your message, and for the first time since I changed the powersaved setting SuSE froze again. Obviously there are multiple issues, and disabling dynamic cpu frequency is only resolving one of them. I think I will try another Linux distribution as well...

Unhappy Suse 10.1 freezes randomly..

Hi Docbill
I really like Suse and it is a pity that it has so many issues at present... Yesterday I tried Kubuntu Edgy EFT 6.10 and it seems to run really well on my laptop. The regular Gnome Ubuntu seems to have some issues. I think this may be a good alternative to Suse in the interim...

I really wish I could install a source based distribution customized to my machine and then run that for a long time without having to update every now and then with newer releases. But this involves a very steep learning curve with a lot of time required....

Thanks again for your help.

suse 10.1 freezes !! - Solution for hp nc6320

In the grub bootloader, the following option should be used:
#############
noapic nosmp
#############

This solved the freezing problem.

"acpi" is active!!

Do not use "acpi=off" option. It exhaust your battery and the cpu
runs always at maximum speed.

Glad to hear this solved your problem. Linux can't boot on my machine with the noapic option.

Suse 10.1 freezes randomly

Hi there
I am not sure if it is such a good idea to boot with noapic option for laptops? What impact does this have on the hardware, if anything at all?

In any case, I installed Arch 64 bit instead of Suse and it seems to work really well without any random freezing and so on. Also, it was really easy to configure even for a newbie like me and the only thing I have not configured is xorg using ati drivers. Everything else including lvm setup, suspend, hibernate and cpu frequency scaling work with a little bit of work, just as they have explained on the web site.

I do not seem to miss Suse any more since everthing that Suse can do can be accomplished through Arch or any other distribution that call for a bit of work at first but once set up, easy enough to administer. I am particularly happy with the thought that I do not have to reinstall the distribution if I wanted a new release. this is great!
Regards

the drawback of "nosmp" option

when "nosmp" option is used, one core of core2duo processor is not used. Smpnnd service should be closed too.
I am not sure what the drawback is when "noapic" is used?
ACPI is on so power management funktions.
