Suggestions for home desktop network usage monitoring

Hello,

I would like to find a good network monitoring program similar to Networx for Windows, meant for the client, not router-based. I would prefer if it didn't need an SQL server and didn't use an HTML interface. It also needs local traffic filtering because while I don't use the computer much for Internet, I use it a lot for local work. When our data caps get used up unexpectedly, we like to know what computer causes it.

Alternatively, I like iptraf because it has most features I need, and could be logged from the CLI. However, it would need a fairly in-depth script and I can't seem to get the filters working to filter out local traffic.

Thanks a lot for any help or ideas you have. I know there have been similar threads, but nothing home desktop computer-based.

Wireshark?

Linux Voice had a tutorial on it a couple of issues ago, though I can't remember off hand which one. I played with it a bit and it seems powerful and versatile.

I've downloaded Wireshark now. I'll try it out when my hardware gets put all back together. Thanks.
