Strange X-Login problem how do I diagnose?

I am having a problem with X it blackscreens at login.

My System
=========
I am running Fedora Core 2 on a Pentium 4 PC with a Matrox G450 Graphics Card. The system was working fine a few days ago.

What happens.
============
Initially when I booted under Linux. X seemed to come up OK it would progress through its boot sequence (with the graphics). Just as it was switching to the login screen the monitor went black. Underneath all of this the computer was working find (I was able to SSH to it and make use of it).

What I have Tried
==============
I have tried changing inittab so that the system boots in text mode (run level 3) and then I have tried starting X with startx. I can login fine but when I type startx I get a black screen. When I changed inittab back to start on run level 5 I lost X altogether (even for those brief moments on startup) I don't know why that is.

I have tried typing Ctrl Alt + and Ctrl Alt - to cycle through screen modes. This didn't work. I have tried typing Ctrl Alt F1 Ctrl Alt F2 to bring up other login screens (This had no effect).

How do I start to diagnose the problem. This being Linux there is bound to be a log file somewhere that contains an error message that will give me some hint as to what is going on. Does anyone have a clue as to where this might be. Does anyone have any ideas as to what else I can try.

try typing "startx &" and the switch to text mode with CTRL ALT F1 (login console) and see the output of X. you can either take a look to log files /var/log and search for X logs, i dont know if that's the correct path to look into...

Tried that. When I type startx & the screen goes black. When I type Ctrl Alt F1 nothing changes. When I type Ctrl Alt Backspace nothing happens.

When I look in /var/logs/Xorg.0.log

I get the following errors

(EE) MGA(0): [drm] DRIScreenInit failed. Disabling DRI.
(EE) Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap

Any ideas???

A quick google search hasn't revealed anything of interest, but I'll keep trying.

Try
Code:
startx -- :2 &
with the blanks exactly as shown. This should start a X-session on <F8>-key (for errors toggle between Ctrl Alt <F1> and Ctrl Alt <F8>).

Tried that too

Thanks for that that doesn't work either. I type Ctrl Alt F1 and Ctrl Alt F8 and the system sits there like a pudding.

Now I have supposedly started X on the machine locally (by typing startx) the machine is got a black screen. If I log on to the machine remotely as another user and type

-bash-2.05b$ ps aux | grep x

I get

root 1606 0.0 0.0 2092 432 ? S 12:38 0:00 klogd -x
root 2082 0.0 0.0 2956 884 ? S 12:38 0:00 xinetd -stayalive -pidfile /var/run/xinetd.pid

dac33 2821 0.0 0.0 4084 576 pts/0 R 14:01 0:00 grep x

I don't see any sign of an X type process running there ????? I looks like there is no process that is actually running X.

Any ideas??

Cheerio

try disabling the DRI module in XF86Config file. it this does not work try also applyng a VESA driver in your device section (always in XF86Config file).

X is capital too. With ps do a ps -ax | grep X or ps -ax | grep -i x
Perhaps you can post your /etc/XF86Config
