strange imap happenings

I've been having a curious problem with my mail server and I can't seem to find any help with it. I have a Red Hat 9 box running Sendmail. For the most part, I use Mozilla Thunderbird to check my mail with an imap connection, but occasionally I log into the system and use pine to check it. The odd thing is that after I log out, when I go back to Thunderbird, none of the messages in my inbox show up. They are still there because I can go back in with pine and see them all, but only new messages appear in Thunderbird. The way I get around this is to go into pine and move all the messages from INBOX to a temp folder I made. Then I go back to Thunderbird, open the temp folder and move all the messages back into my inbox. I don't know if this is a problem with Thunderbird (though I've heard it happen to people who use Eudora). Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I'm guessing that pine is connecting via pop3 and downloading all of the messages from the server, whereas Thunderbird with IMAP will expect the messages to be stored on the server, but, alas, Pine has removed them from the server.

To be clear: Reading messages in Thunderbird with IMAP: Messages are stored on server.
Reading messages with a POP client: Messages are (generally) downloaded and stored on the client. I haven't used pine in MANY years, but I would imagine you can set it up so that it doesn't delete messages from the server.

But pine isn't deleting the messages. As far as I know, Pine and Thunderbird are reading from the same mailbox files. If I create a new folder in Thunderbird, it shows up in Pine.

Also, there is a server at work that we I can use pine and Thunderbird and not have this happen. I can go back and forth between the two and still be able to see all of the messages in there.

I'll look into the settings for pine and see if there is anything in there. Thanks.
