Strange Evolution problem

I built a Red Hat 9 box for a friend who uses a different 56k ISP than me.

Iordered an Actiontec 56k V92 external modem which works perfectly with my provider. I tested Evolution with my phone connection and everything works as expected. However, when I took the box to his office and set it up, the Actiontec establishes connection but Evolution hangs at the first splash screen and nothing loads. It is reproducible every time and has to be xkilled and killeved to be put out of it's misery.

Further, Evolution runs without problems when there is NO 56k connection present, but reverts to above hanging when connection is made.

I tried bringing up Evolution before making the connection then checking e-mail and everything works.

Kmail works and gives no problems whatsoever, but I think he'd be happier with Evolution.

I don't know if this is pertinent, but the difference between his ISP and mine is, I consistently get 49 to 50k and this same box gets around 40k average from his. Also his provider is V92 compliant whereas mine is still V90.

I've been using Ximian Evolution on 5 different machines with 56k, cable and DSL for over a year and have never run into anything remotely similar to this. It appears the problem is being caused by the presence of his 56k connection, but what beyond that, I don't know.

Any ideas? I'm baffled...

No hints from the logs?
ppp problems?
What are the DNS settings?
How long has it locked up for?

No hints. ppp works well enough to run Kmail, Galeon and RealPlayer without problems.
I appreciate the interest, but we decided it just wasn't worth the effort, and are going to continue using Kmail. Thanks.
