Strange audio problem with MPLAYER when using surround

Hi...

As the title suggests, I've been trying to get Mplayer to work using my 5.1 speaker setup with my audigy sound card. At the moment, I have sound coming from all of the speakers (when doing anything like listening to music or watching movies) but I don't have them working in surround mode.

I started mplayer with the flag -channels 6 and whilst playing a DVD (minority report to be specific) I hear no voices. I can hear the ambience and background music but no voices it all. This only happens when I run in 5.1 surround mode.

Any ideas?

bumping? tsk... you're meant to [at least pretend] you have more information to bring to light....

I've no experience at all with 5.1 sound, but what i'd suggest experimenting with is the "-af pan" filter. you can use this to move channels around and see if you can make others appear... it's hardly likely to solve your problem, but might get closer to knowing where the sound is (not) going to or (not) coming from... maybe it's the audio drivers (oss, alsa etc...) that aren't dealing with the sound?

Yeah, I thought of the possibility that the problem might lie with my sound setup. In all honesty, I'm not that well read-up on sound in linux. It works. I just decided to try and get 5.1 out of the setup, considering it's more than capable.

The way I've set it up, I have sound coming from all 5 speakers, in just normal stereo mode. If it's of any help, my asound.state file is located here: http://breaker.symclan.co.uk/breakerfall/asound.state

Thanks for the reply

I had the same problem. To remedy it I used the -aid 128 switch...

Code:
mplayer -aid 128 dvd://1
