Stop terminal emulators from overriding xterm app's colors.

I've been trying to make some themes for apps like mc and elinks. I've tried Konsole, Rox, Xfce4-terminal and xterm itself. They all seem to use their own colors, instead of the colors specified in the cli-app's theme. How can I stop this from happening?

Update:

Looks like it's not the terminal emulators fault. If I ssh to another Linux host (Arch), mc's theme will appear as it should.

So I've tried using different shells, bash, dash, and zsh. Same issue. Not sure where to look next.

Stab in the dark

/etc/skel?

~/.config?

The hidden files? Take my suggestion with salt. Being a self taught linux user and all.
Not even hip on what you are trying. I use mocp mostly and only mc to bail me out of borked dist-upgrades.
