command that is not workin


ok, i ran this command : rpm -ivh gaim-0.71-1rh9.i386.rpm

and recieved this :

warning: gaim-0.71-1rh9.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 883c1c14
error: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Operation not permitted (1)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

i have no idea what's up, hopefully someone can help.

su into root. that's a permissions problem error.

what do u mean " su into root"

sorry i don't know what u mean, i am Xtremely new/horrible to linux. more than appreciate the help tho. it seems that all the problems i am having is with permissons. So maybe u can help me out Big time if u can tell me how to correct.

at the command line type this command:

su

then enter the root password. then type in that rpm command again.

ok, differnt error now

ok, the su rids the permission problem. Thanks for that. now another problem

i ran rpm -ivh (filename)

what package are you trying to install in your above post?

edit:

nevermind.

run this command first instead:

rpm -Uvh <filename>

ok that worked excellent.

thanks for ur help mega, i assumed that installed it fine, no errors or nothing came up, now i am unsure how to run it, sorry for being so slow and thanks for your help.

just type "gaim" in the command line.

YES!!!

finally, i want to thank you so much for the help. that su command enabled me to install tsl/tk as well. I'm new so thanks for making me aware of the basics. I can now access Msn now. Thanks so much!!! fast replies too~~

cool. glad it's working for you. gaim is nice as it has support for yahoo, aim/icq, msn, etc...

just remember when setting up accounts that screenname is not your nickname, but the name you use to login -> ie... some_user2000@hotmail.com
alias is what i would normally call the screenname. what you see when chatting with someone -> ie... some_user2000

ya this program is great.

one last thing, dou know off hand to change my nic, i says the nic i want on my screen right, but others are seeing and old one i had when i used to log in with windows.

in gaim, where you see your list of buddies, etc... go to the file menu bar and click Tools > Accounts.

highlight your account and click modify. the thing you want to change is Alias. then click the Save button.

ya that doesn;t want to seem to work. no big deal,

ya i tried that and still no go, no biggy tho, just glad to have finnaly got it to work.

another question for u since u know ur stuff: how can i get to my XP ntfs partitions. and does winx let me install windows programs?? i guess that two questions. lol sorry

odd. that should work. i just changed my screen handle...

anyway, as far as ntfs goes, what distro and kernel version are you running?

well distro would be redhat 9.1 i am assuming. And kernal, i dunno offf hand, how do i figure it out.
