Steam, Internet Explorer, and Wine (sounds like a partayyy! ;-) )

I've seen similar threads, but none that adress my problems.

I am trying to run Steam under Linux using Wine. However, wine needs Internet Explorer to run. So I got Mike's version here . It installed with an error message (can't remember what it was, if necessary I can reinstall and see what it says) but other than that runs. However, it won't load web pages, and the menus don't work (can't open internet settings, for example).

Steam installed fine, but can't launch games - it hangs at the "Updating Half-Life: Preparing to play Half-Life" dialog box. It includes, below, two windows, one with the latest patches, and the other with an ad for a sponsor - both of which are empty. My suspicion is that it needs IE to render part of its GUI, and that's giving problems.

So: Anyone who can help me with getting IE working? (ie had the same problem of not loading web pages and able to fix it).

Thanks,

atm

Btw, I've tried a cvs version of winex, wine 20031212, and wine 20040309. 0309 hangs and works less well than 1212 - I get the best results with 1212. Ultimately I could try crossover, but that costs $$...

I'm not sure why you'd want to play when there's always UT2004, and much cooler games like that.

I have the ut2k4 demo and it runs nicely, but Steam/HL has some fun mods - and I already own a copy. I'm also working on making AMX mods for my computer club, and being able to do it under linux could make it nicer.

People *have* gotten it to work (i've seen screenshots etc), so I know it's possible.

How do you installed internet explorer after installing wine? I got an error saying I need to configure my wine config file. What do I need to configure?

How did you install wine? Normally when you compile it from source it asks you to setup your ~.wine configuration. Or you can get a program, like winetools (look up wine at sourceforge.net). I never really understood how a binary package can easily get you setup in terms of config files, so if you used one, that could be your problem.

To check if what I was saying was right, I installed slackware's binary package and don't have a wine.conf anywhere... which confuses me, because you kind of need one, I always thought. So if you don't have a wine.conf, find a way to get one.

So, where did you get your wine from?

Before I reformatted I compiled wine from source, but used a utility to configure it easily. It was probably winetools, but I can't really remember.

I never really got steam working :-/ I installed IE but I couldn't access pages. I tried the CVS version of winex (hey better than nothin' if i want to try winex) and I tried a compiled version of nornal wine. They had difficulties with different stuff, was never able to run games. Somehow I always manage to bork something with my wine installs, I think IE borked itself that time.

use winex, it is supposed to fully support steam and shouldn't require internet explorer; if you want to guarantee (almost) that it will work, you need to make a $15 subscription to get the version with all the non-gpl'ed parts of the program

www.transgaming.com

trust me, it's not worth trying to get internet explorer working in wine

I'll agree with OneAndOnly. WineX from Transgaming works quite well - I'm running CS 1.5 and 1.6 with Steam under MDK 10 with it and I get better OpenGL framerates than in Windoze (and that's with an ATI Radeon to boot).
