starting x in vnc

i finally got vnc to work so that im able to see my desktop from winxp. when i connect to the session, a get a command prompt. b4 hand i init 1 so that x isnt running. when i use init 5 from the vnc session, x starts, but it doesnt show up in the window session, only on the actual mepis box. i would like to be able to either autostart x when i log in remotely, or start a separate x window so that it doesnt mess with the one currently open. is that possible?

any help will be appreciated

thanks!

(using mepis 3.3 btw)

few things. number 1, you should not be running at runlevel1 (init 1) unless you are in dire need of troubleshooting. runlevel 1 as i understand it is single user root ONLY. this is for troubleshooting only.

runlevel 2 and 3 can be multiuser without GUI, runlevel 4 and 5 should be multiuser with GUI, runlevel 6 should be restart and runlevel 0 should be shutdown.

ok that being said, change your runlevel to 2, 3, 4, or 5 as the default runlevel. then either via SSH (can use putty from your windows box) or directly on the linux box in a konsole, or terminal enter the following command:

Code:
vncserver -geometry 1024x768 -depth 16 :1
this will creat a VNC vertual client with 1024x768 res at 16bit on (forget the correct term here) :1

if that is the first time you have ran that command you will be promted for a password. then from your windows box when you enter the IP address of your linux box you will need to add the :1 at the end of the IP.

example:

192.168.1.100:1

enter the vncserver password and poof you are in.

that will give you a seperate desktop that is controlled ONLY by the vnc user. if you want to get direct controll of the real users desktop you will need x11vnc and then the user will have to open a konsole inside the GUI and type the following:

Code:
x11vnc -multi
might be many, i forget been a while since i did that one. so try multi first, if that does not work, then try many.

x11vnc will give you direct access to the current users desktop just like vnc does in windows. the -multi or -many will alow you to X out of that seassion without having to go back to your linux box and retype the x11vnc command every time you get disconnected or X out.

hope that helps.
