Starting to build a cluster

I am new to LQ.org (just registered). Although I have used Linux for years, I don't consider myself an expert (at all). I am in the process of building a cluster. I am replacing Hard disks and software on one of my old clusters after moving it to the basement in the Physics Department where I teach (Oakland University, Michigan). This one came totally configured from the vendors (PSSC Labs) 5 years ago. It is an old horse, but I can still take some juice from it. And it is a nice challenge to put everything together. Therefore, expect many questions about the specifics of this task.
Sincerely,

George Martins

Smile First problems...

Thanks to both Eric and jefro (what did your brother major in? I teach Physics)

OK. I have some quick questions (more will come sun... : )

What is a good software to test the integrity of hard disks. I bought some on e-bay
and need to check what is there state (I paid just 20 bucks each).

Second, has anyone out there used LAMMPS? (http://lammps.sandia.gov/) I want to
install it in the cluster, but the serial version of it. The manual is not really great...
I found this webpage:
http://hpclab.blogspot.com/2010/05/q...-on-linux.html
But this guy is describing an installation for Intel compilers and I have
AMD Opterons (dual core). Any hints??

Thanks again!!!

george
