Exclamation squid filedescriptors limit


Hi there,

i have a squid box running with 2.4.26 linux kernel and squid-2.5-stable3 and i wish to turn it to an ISP box with a central squid and cache box. This means more connections to the box for like over 100 clients. i want to optimize the box by increasing the file descriptors to 8192.

i went thru Henrik Nordström's Squid work -> Large filedescriptors on Linux 2.2 and later and tried the following

1. Edit /usr/include/bits/types.h to define __FD_SETSIZE to at least the amount of filedescriptors you'd like to support.

my observation: i noticed that the the __FD_SETSIZE is located at /usr/include/bits/typesizes.h and not /usr/include/bits/types.h and the defaut value is 1024, nonetheless i changed it to 8192.

2.Before configuring Squid run "ulimit -HSn 8192

my observation: the command was ok and i got 8192 when i ran nthe command ulimit -H -n

3.Configure, build and install Squid

my observation: i used the RPM version of squid and not the tar ball. squid installed perfectly

4. Make sure your script for starting Squid contains the above ulimit command to raise the filedescriptor limit. You may also need to allow a larger port span for outgoing connections (set in /proc/sys/net/ipv4/, like in "echo 1024 32768 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_local_port_range")

my observation: i edited the /etc/init.d/squid and inserted the ulimit command (ulimit -HSn 8192) and echo 1024 32768 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_local_port_range on a line

i then rebooted and started squid. i then used the squid cache manager portion of webmin to see the current stats of file descriptors but it was still dispaying 1024 the same as the default.

the appendix of the squid init script and types.h and typesizes.h is below
