squid configuration for constent VPN connect/disconnect

I'm in a situation where I need to connect to my work via VPN. When I do I loose access to all my local printer, fileservers, etc. There's no way around it as it's the policy of my company.

So I was wondering is there a way to configure squid to try a direct connect if that fails go through a second proxy?

That way I don't have to keep switching the proxy config files everytime I need to connect/disconnect from the VPN.

The constent back and forth drives my GAIM client nuts. If I can't get squid to auto-sense the network it should solve that problem.
