squid complaining about redirector processes

I have squid and squidGuard installed on a Slackware 10 box.
From time to time squid is shutting down itself complaining about the number of redirector processes, which are too few, he says in the cache.log.
In the config file I have the redirector processes line commented, so it takes the default 5.
If I increase them the system slows down.
What can I do to stop squid shutting down due to this error?
PS: I have 1500+ users and 1 GB of RAM.
