Spyware?

Is there any spyware availble for linux I could install? I want to move permanently to linux, but right now I dual boot to windows so I can run great quality software like Bonzi Buddy, Gator, Web 3000, Xupiter, and New .NET.

Is there any linux equivalents I could install?

Change the root password to 'letmein',
make sure there is a telnet or ssh daemon running and I'll play spyware :)

nakkaya 03-06-2003 04:27 PM

just curious what are you gonna do with it?

cuckoopint 03-06-2003 09:56 PM

'rootkit' sounds soo much better than 'spyware'

Doze gave 'spyware' such a bad connotation....
; )

Jokes apart, are there spyware issues in Linux? Is there some kind of anti-spyware programs available?

nakkaya 03-07-2003 01:19 PM

because nealry all the progs in linux are open source someone will remove and realise it again :)

tcaptain 03-07-2003 01:48 PM

anti-spyware: netfilter :D

nakkaya is correct, if there was trojan code in opensource stuff it would eventually be found (I think sooner than later) and if you happen to have a closed source linux program (can't imagine what that might be) and IT has trojan code running, a proper firewall would stop it cold, I think.

Come to think of it, this might apply even to a trojan'd windows machine running behind a linux firewall/router no? :D

There is virtually no spyware for Linux due to these simple facts:

* It would be difficult to infect a linux system because many Linux users are more careful about downloads.
* There are very few non open-source code Linux apps which it could piggy-back on.
* There are hardly any systems with linux that have data of interest to the Gator. Linux runs servers more than personal desktops. The extremely few desktops which might get infected would not be worth it.

It's simply not economical to deploy spyware for Linux platforms because of low market saturation of the OS, easier detection, and a more informed user base. This is the same reason there are virtually no viruses written for Linux.
