Spellcheck problem on OpenOffice.org

I'm having a problem with the spell check on OpenOffice. When typing an incorrect word, or even one from a foreign language (from West Africa), it doesn't see anything wrong.

Any ideas as to what causes this?

Was it working before?
Sometimes an upgrade will clobber a custom dictionary.lst file.

AutoSpellcheck needs to be turned on, I think it defaults to off at first start. Also, check Format -> Character -> Font to see what language is set, and if it has the little ABC check mark icon--if it doesn't have the icon, then OOo doesn't have the spelling dictionary (OOo dictionaries are separate from any system dictionaries).
