Speeding up loading a program by running it beforehand

Is there a way you can have an X program load into memory but not actually display so that when you ask it to load properly it's ready to go? - like the Mozilla quick startup and MS Office do in Windoze.

For example:

Have konqueror always in the background, doubling as a quick file manager and browser too? er... like Explorer... hmm

I don't know about loading programs into the background but linux has prelink which preloads some of the stuff to speed up access.

Just leave it open on one of your virtual desktops. Linux will release the memory when it's not used.

- I'm using prelink & preempt with 2.6 kernl, yes it makes a big difference

- I should be able to do that with my combination of icewm and .xinitrc so that it doesn't get in the way too much. Not exactly sure how I'm going to do this yet though
