Spamassassin Digest::SHA1

Hi Guys,

Trying to setup spamassassin (vers 3.0.2) on a debian woody box. I could easily do this with apt-get but I want to try to do it the hard way . Anyhow, I installed Digest::SHA1.pm by:

perl -MCPAN -e shell
cpan> install Digest::SHA1

Now, that perl mod is in: /root/.cpan/build/Digest-SHA1-2.10/SHA1.pm

Now, I'm in my spamassasin source directory and tried perl Makefile.PL and it gives:

Warning: prerequisite Digest::SHA1 failed to load: Can't locate Digest/SHA1.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/local/lib/perl/5.6.1 /usr/local/share/perl/5.6.1 /usr/lib/perl5 /usr/share/perl5 /usr/lib/perl/5.6.1 /usr/share/perl/5.6.1 /usr/local/lib/site_perl .) at (eval 11) line 3, <STDIN> line 2.
Writing Makefile for Mail::SpamAssassin
Makefile written by ExtUtils::MakeMaker 5.45

So, I make a directory called Digest in /usr/lib/perl/5.6.1/ and placed SHA1.pm in there. Running perl Makefile.PL now gives:

Warning: prerequisite Digest::SHA1 failed to load: Can't locate loadable object for module Digest::SHA1 in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/local/lib/perl/5.6.1 /usr/local/share/perl/5.6.1 /usr/lib/perl5 /usr/share/perl5 /usr/lib/perl/5.6.1 /usr/share/perl/5.6.1 /usr/local/lib/site_perl .) at (eval 11) line 3
Compilation failed in require at (eval 11) line 3, <STDIN> line 2.
Writing Makefile for Mail::SpamAssassin
Makefile written by ExtUtils::MakeMaker 5.45

1. Ok, so what do I need to get this module to be recognized?
2. What is @INC?

I'm not really fluent in understanding perl modules and how they work. Can someone shed some light? Thank you so much for your help
