Red face Soundserver (artsd) crashed.. signal 11 - (no sound)

Hey all!, I just installed linux today for the first time and i was really enjoying it until i discovered i had no sound!

Im using slackware 11, and every time i try to play audio i get this error:
The application Soundserver (artsd) crashed and caused the
signal 11 (SIGSEGV).

what the hell do i do!?! im really struggling and having no audio which means i pretty much have no choice but to go back to windows (which id rather not).

Any suggestions on what i could try to fix this?
I have tried various commands like alsamixer, alsactl store, alsaconf.. but i cant get it to work.

cheers, and please help me!
