SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio card - problem with listening to music

When I try to open some of usic files (mp3, ogg, wav,...) i get the sound of damaged file (i know it's not damaged). This happends when I try to play any file with any player. I have SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio, i installed codecs .. Can somebody help me?

those integrated sound thingys are hard -- it's like one chip behind another.
the codecs obviously degrade the sound some but otherwise
there are three different sound drivers for your sound chipset -- based upon which motherboard the sound chipset is on. so check and see if you are loading the right module
what kind of motherboard is it ? even on the various motherboards it can be by different manufacturers i think
intel uses snd-intel8x0
i think asus make a driver themselves
ATI seems to think Linux doesn't exist so i'm not sure about that one
there might be alsa driver for all three ?
other than that
there can be two things that makee garbled sound, buffer size, or bus latency set too short
prob more also i don't know about.

as root run the command
lspci -v
and see what it says the sound card is
over on the left it will say something like 02:0a.0 or something for your soundcard
i will call this <cardname>
also you can note here the manufacturer of the sound thingy and that will give clues about the right driver
now use the cammand
setpci -v -s <cardname> latency_timer=ff
for me with 02:0a.0 that would be
setpci -v -s 02:0a.0 latency_timer=ff
see if that helps

you will also most likely have to make a ~/.asoundrc and make some more adjustments to the alsa buffer

So, I can see only multimedia controller ...not sound card ..

igor@44 09-09-2005 03:38 AM

I think this is my sound card:

Vendor: ALi
Model: Corporation M5 455 PCI

AC-LINK CONTROLLER AUDIO DEVICE

Module: SND-INTEL 8x0

Can somebody help me?
