Sound w/ Arts went from fine to just static

Just recently, my RH 9.0 system (KDE, aRts sound server) decided that instead of playing music, sounds, or anything it would instead play static. The static only plays for as long as the appropriate sound should play for, but it affects anything that uses KDE to play sound. XMMS, for instance, plays static songs, and the background effects, such as windows closing, are all short bursts of static. Command-line tools such as cdplay work normally, as does everything if I log out and back in with a GNOME session. Interestingly enough, if in the KDE Control Center/System Bell I enable the bell and play a test, I get a normal beep (from the soundcard - I'm sure, as I use headphones).

This is something that just started happening - I've used KDE and listened to music for the whole 62 days I have up RH 9 uptime. Does anyone have the slightest idea how to fix this, or even what happened? Thanks...

Thanks for the suggestion, but killing artsd and running XMMS with OSS and ESOUND outputs instead gave the same result. KsCD and cdplay still work fine.

Do you or does anyone know the appropriate files or packages to try replacing? I don't really want to swtich window managers, and this is such a weird problem! Thanks...
