sound static on kaffeine

i recently installed kaffeine video player on fedora2. the video works fine but i'm having trouble getting a clean sound. when the program starts up the sound is scratchy -- full of static.

the sound on the system is fine otherwise. cds play well. sound files play well. system sounds play well.

when i change the xine engine parameters - to anything really oss/alsa/etc - the sound is better for a while. but then it cuts out and sometimes goes back to the static.

is there any setting that could change this? i've checked all the settings in volume control. any slider that is too high i put at about half level.

after the parameter is changed when i close the program an open it again it goes right back to the default setting (of course) and the sound is again very bad.

when i check the volume settings (after changing them) they keep reverting to several strange settings. i have a soundblaster live! card installed that gives me no real other trouble. but under volume control there are about 30 sliders available for EACH of the EMU10K1 options.
-EMU10K1 PCM
-EMU10K1 PCM SEND
-EMU10K1 PCM SEND ROUTING

any ideas? does anyone know if these problems/issues are related?

i'll appreciate your help. (even your attempts to help. heck even your attention. we novices are at the mercy of the community)

If you use alsa then at the command line try

Code:
alsaconf
then
Code:
alsactrl -store
Also check the third tab on Kmix called switches. Make sure Audigy Analog/digital output Jack is off

Hope this helps

i tried your suggestions but at the command line i get a message telling me that the command is not found.

i opened up kmix and there were only two tabs. output and input.
