sound slightly shagged

Hello There

Sound is normally ok on my machine but at the moment i get nothing from
xine, totem or xmms - although realplayer radio works ok. I'm sure a
reboot will sorfit out but i'd rather try and find out without a reboot.
Is there any service/process i can stop and restart?

I use gnome and when i open nautilus, and go up and down through directories it makes the usual beep sound - so the sound is not completly shagged on the pc.

Any help greatly appreciated

cheers

Ross

You need to check if you have permissions to read and write to /dev/dsp

A simple check would be to login as root and try again - is you can play stuff as root then it's definitely permissions.

If you are using realplayer as a normal user then it may be you do not have the correct codec to play whatever it is you are trying to.

also, run gnome-volume-control and make sure you have the right sound balance.

sometimes the sound module(s) can get mangled by an application that ended badly - you could try to remove the soundcore module and associates but if they are hung then I don't know how to do this without a reboot.

I'm not any kind of sound expert so hopefully someone with more experience with this kind of stuff will reply.

good luck dude :-)

I'm sure it's the last one - a bad app temporally shagging it. I'm pretty sure just a reboot would sort it out, but I would like to know how to do it manually, if possible. Even my mail messager still tells me i've got mail - it's just the media players that don't seem to work

Cheers anyhow
