sound skipping in Mandrake 10.0 official

I just received my new Mandrake 10.0 official disks and was very excited to install and use the official version of 10.0 because I had been using the Community version for so long... but now I have a problem: my sound skips whenever I try to play anything. When I play a CD, it skips; when the system plays a sound, it skips; when I play a movie file, it skips... It sounds kind of similar to an old record skipping, as in it just keeps repeating the same piece of "sound data" for a while until it decides to move on to the next piece of "sound data" to play over and over and over again... I love listening to my CD's and watching videos and such, and I'm heartbroken that my NEW version of 10.0 messed up something that worked great in the Community version. I have a Sony PCG-V505DX laptop with an Intel soundcard... I know that doesnt help much but it probably has nothing to do with my card, because it worked great before I re-installed linux. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Try this if you're running KDE:

Open Mandrake Control Center (MCC) and navigate to sound-->sound system

On the General tab, you'll nocite a section entitled Skip Prevention (should be the middle of three sections). Increase the length of your sound buffer by moving the slider to the right and see if that helps. You may have to log out and back in for the settings to stick.

tried that... still skips. logged out then in again, still skips... rebooted (several times) still skips... i'm confused. I think maybe going back to 10.0 Community would be easier, it seems to run faster than 10.0 Official also. Unless you have any other easy changes to try I'll be migrating backwards in the near future. Thanks for your help!

Well, I re-installed 10.0 Community, then upgraded (instead of a complete install) to 10.0 Official, and now everything works like before. Not sure what caused the trouble, but it all works now. Thanks for the help.

i know that i had a problem in community with my xmms and ogg files.
options, preferences, audio i/o plugins, output plugin, alsa. i had to shut off the nmap option to get it to play with a continuous sound.

you might have to turn on your hdparm, dma, for the movies.
root
hdparm -d1 /dev/???

good luck.
