Edit ~/.mplayer/config or pass the options on the command line, i.e. mplayer -ao alsa movie.avi to view movie.avi with the Alsa output plugin. Type mplayer -vo help for other audio output options.

mplayer -ao alsa
the output is:
Option mplayer needs a parameter at line 2
