Sound Not Working in Anything except KDE 3 (This is a SOFTWARE problem)
Dear All,
KDE is way too slow on this laptop, so I want to try out other window managers. The Window Managers I have tried so far are: KDE 3.0 GNOME 1.4 XFce (dunno the version) WindowMaker (dunno the version) For some odd reason, I cna only get sound in KDE 3 (running xmms). All other window managers simply don't give sound. Can anyone help? The Setup: OS: SuSE Linux Professional 8.0 Kernel: 2.4.18 (SuSE default) Window Managers involved: (see above) Sound Card: ESS PnP AudioDrive (ES1869) using driver snd-es18xx Please help if you can. Thanx :) |
When you log into any other WM, see if there's an option to turn the sound server on, or not. KDE uses the aRts sound server, Gnome uses something else, there's also the Esound thing... there's lots. Go to that WMs config screen (if available) and check out the settings.

You Are Right but.....
Thanx for the reply. Apparently whenever some application manages to start the sound server it works perfectly. The question is HOW do I set it up to start the sound server by default? I looked under the WindowMaker preferences tool, but I found nothing of the sort. Can anyone help?
Thanx again for the reply. |
Can anyone tell me how to START the sound server under windowmaker. The way I suaully do it is run a Gemboy emulator which somehow forces it open. I cannot figure out how to do it otherwise. say when using Xmms. Please help :(

I would like to see this thread ressurected as I have exactly the same problem. How do I start the aRts soundserver if not in KDE???
|
goto the control center, expand sound and click sound server. Tick the top box that says Start aRts on KDE startup. then restart X, that should do the trick...

I have found limited (yet valuable) success by messing around with starting the server manually. Try one of the following Open up a konsole, and log in as root. Then try either 1.) artsd start or 2.) rcalsasound start If the commands are not there, try typing the first 3 letters (e.g rcal) then hitting tab. |
or sometimes you don't even need arts...ive found it to be a pain in the arse generally, so i stopped it from launching and KDE is just playing straight to the sound card (/dev/dsp) to do a test to see if the soundcard works via the cli, find a pure wav file, and copy it to /dev/dsp (or whatever your soundcard device is), eg: cp /root/test.wav /dev/dsp
and it should start playing. or if you have amp installed, just issue the command: amp /path/to/mp3/file these both should work in the cli which doesn't use arts...would just be good to see the outcome of this... |
I had this problem too (sound in KDE but not GNOME). I just put the command "modprobe dmasound_pmac" (without the quotes of course) in my .xinitrc and that fixed it right up. :)
