Sound mutes when X opens :) WTF ?

I'm using Slackware Linux 10. I configured sound properties from alsamixer and saved it via alsactl store command. But when logging into X, something mutes the PCM, CD and other volume options. What can I do to prevent this ? Thanx a lot..

Plain X or some WindowManager and/or
DesktopEnvironment?

X.Org with GNOME 2.6
