Question Sound Install Probs...

I've been trying to get my Ensoniq soundcard to work properly with my TurboLinux Server 6.0 installation...

when I modprobe es1371 I get an error message on init that says Device or resource busy.

Any ideas on what might be causing this? The soundcard definately isn't working...

Thanks!

Are you certain your Ensoniq card is a 1371? There are about 4 flavors of module of Ensoniq cards from that kernel era. Also, is this an ISA card, which is kinda a longshot because most of these were onboard sound.

Basically, what's the output of: lspci and lsmod should get us started on the right track.

If you're certain this thing is PCI, and there isn't a sound module already apearing in lsmod, you might want to to just cd over to /lib/modules/2.2.?/misc and try and insmod anything beginning with 'es'. It worked for me... but yeah, it is sorta the shotgun approach.

Cheers,

It's definately pci....I believe it's the Ensoniq AudioPCI which I believe is the 1371....

I'm gonna go check out the stuff you mentioned and I'll post back.

Thanks for the reply!

Exclamation

OK...I had some success of sorts...

First of all, here's the information that I got from lspci and lsmod:

lspci shows:
00:08.0 Multimedia Audio Controller:Ensoniq ES1370 [AudioPCI]

lsmod shows:

module size used
soundcore 2504 0 (autoclean)(unused)

From this I conclude (please correct me if I'm wrong) that it is trying to use the ES1370 chip drivers, but that something is wrong?

I then went and inserted the es1371 module...I had sound! But then my machine s..l...o....w....ed and crashed. I got errors on restart and eventually got back in...I figure that loading the ES1371 module wasn't something my system was ready for?

I'm about to try inserting the es1370 module to see if I have any better luck.

Any further advice? Thanks in advance!

Yeah, 1370 is the right module for the job. I've got the same, onboard, in the old gateway I'm typing this on. Its a crappy card in the long run, but it will produce perfectly good sound and has been very well supported under Linux for a long time.

Oh, soundcore by the way is just the base module necessary for sound... These things stack depending on what was compiled into the kernel and what was compiled as a module. RH, Mandrake, and most of the other distros like to have everything un-necessary to running the system compiled as modules so you insert them as you need them. I haven't tried TurboLinux, but I'm pretty certain its much the same way.

Cheers,

Finegan
