Sound help badly needed

Up until today, my sound playback has worked fine (Ubuntu, Fiesty Fawn), but I've been doing some audio editing work, and so I adjusted some of the levels in Alsamixer, and now it's all gone downhill. Whatever I try to play sounds like it's peaking like crazy.. it's all scratchy and fizzy and distorted, but I can't figure out what I've done. I've brought everything in alsamixer back down to 0.0dB (no gain) but it seems to make no difference.

Is there a way I can reset all of those settings to their defaults?

Thank you

You may have inadvertently changed the alsa configuration. Try running alsaconf to reconfigure the sound card.

I don't have "alsaconf", does this mean I'm not actually using ALSA to provide my sound?

No... it just means you don't have alsaconf installed. Get the alsa-utils package. You might also want to try 'alsactl restore'. alsactl is in the same package.

Have you tried a reboot?
