Sound heard during soundcard detection but no sound when playing CD

I'm running RHEL3 (2.4.21-4.EL). During soundcard detection, I heard sounds so my sound card is detected and drivers installed. However, when I inserted a CD to play, there is no sound. All the songs on the CD are recognized correctly so it's not a problem with the CD drive. I tried playing some local files on my hard drive. Again no sound. (I've played these files before on Windows so I know it's not a problem with the files.)

When I launched KMidi, I got the flashing warning "ERROR: Can't open Output Device". All the signs confirmed that this is the culprit. Can anyone help me resolve this problem?

hei thanhvn,

I had this problem as well. Your sound card is already accessed by KDE and is busy. That's why you can't hear other sounds. Try to disable KDE sounds and it'll work.

ERROR: Can't open Output Device usually means that other app. is already on the sound card keeping it busy - like KDE itself

mihai451,

How do I disable KDE sounds? (By the way, I'm using GNOME, not KDE).

Does anyone know how to disable KDE sounds? I'm having the exact, same problem as thanhvn. I'm using KDE in SuSE 9.2 and I can hear sounds when I run a diagnostic but nothing when I put in a CD.

Are you using the default CD player which loads when you insert a CD ?

If so stop playback, click Extras, Configure KsCD, Cd Player, put a "x" in Use direct digital playback, click apply should be good to go

I use Suse 9.3 with kde 3.4.1. I've tried this digital playback option in the past with other distros and it's always worked fine. I really prefer KsCD over other cd players..but for some odd reason, I don't even have that option! It's just not there. Odd? I even tried compiling a CVS version. Still no luck. Any ideas?
