sound from cd nothing else

I have sound playing a cd but not much more.

I can play a cd in KDE but cannot play any wav sound from the system, even the bell remain silent .

I have not set artsd as this did not worked properly with ALSA.

Using artsd was not making any difference anyway!!

Any idea.

Thanks

The first thing to check is your sound levels in kmix. Make sure the "Pcm" level is turned up. There are separate volume levels for "CD" and "Pcm". Pcm controls the level for wave playback.

open up the KDE control center, click on KDE componants, and click on File associations, in the right pane you'll see a list, look at the audio group and make sure the audio files you have/use open up in the media player you use.......XMMS, mplayer, kaboodle......etc.
