sound for gnome-2.4

i've just installed gnome 2.4, but my sound support is disabled. it says it cannot find /dev/sound/mixer device. i've got via82cxxx_audio module compiled and that is the module for my sound card. it worked fine with kde's arts. i've tried installing alsa, but it supports only via82xx module, which in fact is similar to mine, it's not that i look for, and alsa cannot load it. what should i do?

does the file /dev/sound/mixer exist?

If it does not, create a symbolic link to /dev/dsp and see if that doesn't resolve the problem.

ln -s /dev/dsp /dev/sound/mixer

(you may have to make the sound directory)
