I know the alsa project has a driver for the ac97.
Also OSS has drivers but they are not free, there is however a crack available.

i810 sound card

I keep having problems with my i810 soundcard as well...

I know it works because i do get some kind of sound with it...but the sound is really scratchy and loud... i suspect it must be a driver problem. how do i go about changing drivers for it? is there a list of drivers?

have you tried the alsa drivers? i got my crystal soundcard (which is usually quite a pain to get working linux) working with them. so you might wanna give that a try.
