Some website are unbrowsable ...

Hi,

So, I can browse lot of web site but some (like google.com ... sick:( ) doesn't work ...
there's just the http request ... and time out.
Moreover I can ping this site ...

I'm sure i've no problem of dns or gateway, everything work fine on my windows or on the linux of my flatemate (same GW same DNS same distrib).

I really don't understand but I suspect the drivers of my 3com gigabit NIC ...

I've this problem on mandrake 9.2 or fedora 1.0 ... maybe 2.4.22 ...

please help me ! I'm going to be mad ...

don't mean to be nitpicking but... when you say they don't work, are you getting a time out, text and no pictures, what are you getting..

If you try a text browser (ie. links) can you get to them. can you ping them, traceroute to them?

Sorry for the barrage but a bit more info might help.

thx for the reply,

i'm getting nothing on google.com, 3com.com, nvidia.com ...
just time out
I can ping and traceroute all these websites ...

I can't browse this forum on linux too ... there is just the img of the bottom left and the little menu of the bottom right ... and nothing ... then time out :(

if I try with links , there is just "HTTP REQUEST SENT ..." and nothing ...

I really don't understand ...

try running 'netconfig' from a terminal window and see if maybe you just need to rest some setting on your nic.

Also a thought try "ifconfig eth0 down" wait about 30 sec. then do "ifconfig eth0 up" and see if you can get to the sites then.

You mentioned your flatmate had the same set up. try swapping connection on your network and see if that might be it too.

setting the MTU of your connection to a lower value might help - it didn't help me, when I had a similar problem under windows  (couldn't access certain websites, like java.sun.com, idsoftware.com, ...), but I heard that it did in some cases.

don't ask me how to do it - I'm just another linux noob ;)

Which disto, which browser:confused: Some sites will not work, Winblows IE only Tusted Computing sites only ya know.

mim 11-29-2003 09:17 AM

the actual distrib is fedora but i've the same prob under mandrake 9.2 ...

all the browser do the same thing ... netscape , mozilla , firebird , opera , links , w3m ....

We've 6 Pc in my flate and all works fine on the other or on my windows ... only my linux suxx ...

I've tried to change the MTU of my eth0 but ... still bugging ...

Imyrryr 11-29-2003 09:37 AM

did you try and swap connections between the two systems?

mim 11-29-2003 09:41 AM

yes , I've tried to change the network cable and the switch ....

I'm going to try to switch the NIC ... after that I'll test the suicide ...

mim 11-29-2003 09:55 AM

I've tried with an old 10Mb card ... and that works ...

WHY NOT WITH MY 3COM CARD !!

snif :'( ...

mim 11-29-2003 10:21 AM

I've unplugged my 10Mb and reactivated my 3com ... and all works fine ...

I've exactly the same configuration as before and that works ...

I don't understand ...

thx

I have a feeling this has to do with one end of your connection set to 100mb/s and the other end set to 10...

Or it's operating at half duplex.

what's this return:
Code:

mii-tool eth0
Should do that as root and it'll tell you what kind of link you have.

my driver is not mii compatible but 95% of website works fine, lan transfert too (11Mo/s) ...

the led of my switch indicate 100Mb Full duplex.

Then it's definitely a driver issue I'd imagine...

What module does it use?
