Some samba help - setting up groups.

hi all,

I have a server running samba to share my files. I want to add another user to the server but want to give them limited access to the server shares like their home directory and 1 or 2 other folders. I know that they need to be added into groups only thing is im not to sure how to set this up..

Any ideas?

To add a user, you use the command 'smbpasswd' as root user. Here is a short description from the doc..

Quote:
When run by root, smbpasswd allows new users to be added and deleted in the smbpasswd file, as well as allows changes to the attributes of the user in this file to be made. When run by root, smbpasswd accesses the local smbpasswd file directly, thus enabling changes to be made even if smbd is not running.
This will allow the root user to add a new user and create a password.

As for setting up the shares, you need entries in the /etc/smaba/smb.conf file for the directories you want to share.

Here is an example of a read only share for a music directory.

Quote:
[Music]
comment = For any user to browse and listen
path = /home/cliff/Music
This directory I control the access, I can read and write, others can read only.

Quote:
[Pictures]
comment = Cliffs digcam pics
path = /home/cliff/Pictures
valid users = cliff, corinne, peigi, @cliff
read list = corinne, peigi, cliff
write list = cliff
read only = No
Some distros have gui tools to create the smb.conf file. I use Swat to configure most things. It is worth installing, if you have not already. It has a lot of documentation also.

Hope this helps.
