Some GTK apps are ugly in KDE

I'm on Debian Sarge with KDE 3.3 and some of my GTK apps don't follow any sort of theme under KDE such as Synaptic. Gaim and Gedit all assimilate to the KDE interface with the gtk-qt engine package I installed, but for some reason, I cannot get synaptic to follow suit and this really annoys me since I'm constantly in Synaptic. Linspire, Mepis, Kubuntu, etc all manage to get Synaptic to use QT to render it, so what am I doing incorrectly?

I'm no expert in KDE having not used it for a couple of years myself, I'd guess the problem lies in that you are starting Gaim and Gedit as a user but you're starting Synaptic as root. Login as root and setup the Qt-GTK engine and then logout. Things should work fine from now

I notice that when you run "kdesu synaptic" you get the interface of the "root" user. But if you run "sudo synaptic" you get your user interface.

Wow I didn't even make that connection! I logged in as root and changed the settings and now it works perfectly! Thank you. Don't you hate when the answer is almost so obvious but you still don't see it?
