Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

I tried to install GAIM earlier on my mandrake 9.1 system, and i needed to go through installing several dependent programs... like aspell and gtkspell, one of which i think required a newer version of gtk... in any case, i downloaded the latest versions of gtk, pango, atk and glib from gtk's homepage and after trying to install gtk figured out that i had to install glib first... well, that didnt seem to go so well... since every time it never came up with any errors(and seemed to install perfectly fine) but then when I ran atk's installer, it said glib wasn't there or something. I installed some glib-devels i found too... but it didn't work. This isn't a very good solution in that i can't understand at all why it wasn't working with the download glib installer, but using the mandrake 9.1's packaged rpm database, i searched for with gtk, glib, gtkspell and installed the newest versions included with the 9.1 installation cds. after that i installed atk and pango, then gtk, which worked this time, and didn't complain about needing glib; after that i installed gaim and its working fine!
