Software to synchronize your files between two systems?

Hi,

I regularly use both my desktop PC and my notebook to do my work, depending on where I currently am. What is really annoying however is that this results in having all my stuff spread over two systems. If I take a note in Tomboy on my PC, it's not on my notebook, where I may need it a day later. If I work on a project in Eclipse and don't commit, I can't continue where I left off on my notebook, and so forth.

So, is there a software which takes two nodes, a couple of directories and synchronizes them? Preferrably something with a nice, usable GUI giving me feedback when I overwite old files etc.

I'm using Linux since 3 years now and this has bugged me for a long time now, any hints appreciated (I'm still waiting for the day where you just do all your work over a network and store the data on a server where it is available to you from any place in the world which has an internet connection, but oh well).

Thanks in advance.

The second one sounds like the gmail File system.. although i can't picture storing all my personal documents out on an Internet server..
