hei ,,,
I'm a newer to linux ,,,
so could you please recommend some common userful softwares for me?
en, such as antivirus software ,firewall,etc...
thank you !
maybe Chinese is better.
Thanks again...
Whatever distribution you choose will have all the common useful software bundled into it already. Don't worry about it.
antivirus: clamav
(...this is to protect windows computers you may interact with. Linux dosn't get viruses.)
firewall: iptables
(comes with every distribution - there are many threads and articles on how to set it up. Alternatively there are many GUI frontends for it to make things simpler... like: firestarter)
the operation i use is ubuntu.
it seems that i have to do many things to get what i want.
the software management package seems not so useful as i wish.
could you recomend some famous software websites for me please???
In windows i could get most software products that i want,
but in linux i couldn't get the way.
Hello and welcome to LQ. I have edited the title of your thread. Please use threads that describe or summarise your problem. Titles like "help me" or "I need help" are not really useful and do not help give your thread the exposure it deserves.

Hi and welcome. You could try sourceforge.net but I'd also suggest you to bookmark www.google.com/linux and use it to find your needed software. Has been working out great for me.
aptitude and apt-get are the best package managers available. So I cannot imagine what you could want besides. There are over 3000 items of software available for install via this method. This is your first port of call for Ubuntu software.
The trick is to get the /etc/apt/sources.lst file configured for more than the basic software needed. The web page above will help with that.
You don't need to do a great deal - everything needed is there in the CD. Now want is a different matter. You don't need mp3 playback for eg. But if you want it, you'll have to install it yourself. Similarily, you don't need a virus scanner...
Linux programs can be in either source packages like tar.gz, tar.bz2, src.rpm or it can come in proprietary packages designed for a certain Linux distribution and machine architecture. This creates confusion and mess of things. I prefer source packages because I can select what features to include during compiling. Though most annoying part of using Linux is finding dependencies for desire programs to install. I use Gentoo and it only gathers dependencies based on features that I want because it compiles and installs them.
Antivirus programs in Linux is not needed because there is basically no viruses yet to ruin your day. Linux has a built-in firefall and it is still the best, but it is improved when every new kernel version comes out. Linux has several programs that is equal and better than what Windows have to offer. What you can do it Windows, is the same thing can be done in Linux. Majority of the popular programs in Linux is handled through the command line.

I do not think so unless liaolliso edited his or her post after reddazz edited. If it was not for kummiliim quoting the first post I can not make heads or tails from it.
If the post has been edited by liaolliso, why is there no message on the bottom of the post saying this post has been edited. This feature was there several months ago but not a few months ago.

In Ubuntu, the firewall is switched off by default.

... that first post is unedited, only the title has changed (by reddaz).

... how many moderators would go to the trouble of putting a helpful title on your thread for you. Most just give up.
Note: kumilliim is quoting from post #3, not the first one.
You had trouble understanding the first post because OP has english as a second lanuage. I think he did OK considering OP is a clear novice at linux and english lets give the user a break eh?

I'm not so sure about the post. I think that the man seems to think that he can get free "Windows" software by using Linux--not: equivalent-to, better-than, or close-to; but the actual "name-brand" software.
Very steep learning curve ahead.
Example:
It takes a long time to become a "Gimp-guru"; I met a "Gimp GOD" once. The guy could do a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g.
Photo-shop is just too e-a-s-y, where's the satisfaction in that?
Well, okay, I can get what I want done in minutes without having to really learn anything.
It's sad that I'm such a wussy.

I edited the title of the thread and not the original post thats why you did not see a "last edited by" comment on the original post. Only mods can modify the title of a thread once its been submitted by the OP and changes made by the mods are recorded in the database but are not seen by other users.
I speak as an English English teacher in China who is also coming to terms with a first successful Linux, ( Kubuntu 6.06), install.
The English is in fact quite good for China, better than many of my college students.
When he says that he can get any Windows software he may exaggerate a little, but what he can get will cost him between 3 - 20 RMB, ( about 8 to the $, 14 to the pound. I have tried many times to get a shrink wrapped Linux from the same places, mostly NO Linux distos are displayed. I have never even found Red Flag, ( Government sponsored, supposedly in use, ( I`ve NEVER seen it), in government offices.
Windoze is ubiquitous, and the Chinese as a whole tend to stick with what everyone else is doing.
In the Chinese mind, and their English pronunciation, there is very little difference between the 3 above and free software. other than one is freely available and low cost, the other one takes effort.
I advise him to find out about distro repositories, seek out Linux applications /alternatives by Baidu ing Linux Alternatives, ( URL is on my Windoze box), and to remember his English is Far better than the lao weis Chinese
it seems to give you some trouble.
Feeling sorry!
Maybe my English hasn't been good enough, and i did not
express my opinion precisely.
but still there's someone who can understand what i said.
i didn't go to such forums like here oftenly.
so perhaps my words seem to be a little unnatural.
but i do like here, and i want to make my english oralized(oral english)heh, often i'd like to creat word as i wish, please forgive me,it's interesting indeed.
and people here are very genial and i really would like to become your friends and learn from all of you.
Thank you ahead of schedule...
And finally i'm chinese.
Nice meeting all of you...
