Software Raid 1

Hello,

I am trying to create a software RAID 1 of my /boot and / partitions? Is this possible in Redhat 9.

If so, can someone explain how it is done?

Do I make the partitions first, then create the Software RAID partition or do I create the Software RAID partition, then the /, /boot and /swap partitions.

I can't seem to figure out the right order of operation here. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
Jason

Thanks for posting this HOW-TO, however, this does not solve my problem. I already knew I could do this, however, this did not anwer my question. I know how to create RAID sets. However, I am having a problem creating a RAID set of the /boot and / partitions. I wanted to know if it was possible, and if so, how to do it.

Thanks,
Jason

OK, I figured this out I think, so I will share with everyone what I have learned. If this doesn't seem right to anyone please let me know. I am going to install and see what happens. Hopefully it won't choke.

Using Disk Druid, this is what I did:

I have two hard drives.

/dev/hda
/dev/hdc

I first created software RAID partitions (sized specifically for my needs) on /dev/hda

/dev/hda
/dev/hda1 software RAID 2047MB
/dev/hda2 software RAID 234433MB (yes 234GB)
/dev/hda3 swap 1992MB

Then I created software RAID partitions (sized exactly like those I created above) on /dev/hdc

/dev/hdc
/dev/hdc1 software RAID 2047MB
/dev/hdc2 software RAID 234433MB
/dev/hdc3 swap 1992MB

I then created a RAID 1 /dev/md0 mounted to /boot
Then I created a RAID 1 /dev/md1 mounted to /
SWAP partitions can't be included in a RAID set, although I don't know why you would want to...

Here is how it looks in the end...

RAID Devices
/dev/md0 /boot ext3 2047.32MB
/dev/md1 / ext3 234433MB

Hard Drives
/dev/hda
/dev/hda1 /dev/md0 software RAID 2047MB
/dev/hda2 /dev/md1 software RAID 234433MB
/dev/hda3 swap 1992MB

/dev/hdc
/dev/hdc1 /dev/md0 software RAID 2057MB
/dev/hdc2 /dev/md1 software RAID 234433MB
/dev/hdc3 swap 1992MB

This should work for me. The key was to create software RAIDs first sized the way you want them (keeping in mind their uses /boot and /) Then creating the RAID1 set using the RAID option and mounting each one specifically to either /boot or /.

I wanted to do this during the install process so that I wouldn't have to worry about drive sizes later.

Hopefully this will help others in the future who want to mirror drives using Software RAID.

Thanks!
Jason

Thanks for putting the way you solved it up
Really annoys all the googling crowd.. and for that matter anyone who has the same problem to see people post: "Ok, I figured it out" and not how
