Unhappy Software Installation

If a package comes with *.rpm , we use rpm -i to install it .
What if programs or softwares do NOT have .rpm ? simply a .tar or directory , what should we do ?
Thank you

Well you untar it with the tar command. Then it depends from there. Read the INSTALL or README file for exact instructions. Browse the forum to search for installing programs from source as this is asked all the time.

You need to compile the program with the source files you've been given there. As trickykid said, read the README and INSTALL files, but they all usually follow this set of commands:

./configure
make
make install

you should also check:
./configure --help
to see if there are any options you want to activate
you can also do
./configure --prefix=[directory]
to specify a destination directory for this software....this is particularly useful if you are trying to install stuff without having root access on that machine.

ALWAYS READ THE README!!!

Sometimes, you only need to decompress them and run a file. No compiling.
