Software download results in grey panel across top of screen, won't go

I am using Mint with Compiz Fusion, I just downloaded two programs, sound juicer and sound converter, after this on my Lenovo desktop, across my start screen is a grey panel like the bottom tray, after restart it will not go. And sound juicer open right at the top and the x out and maximiser are not available in that grey upper tray, but youtube can still full screen. Chromium will open right up to and not including the grey panel. How can I fix this?

Does right-clicking on the panel do anything?

Have you had a look at the programs that are running and carried out some selective process kills to see what's actually causing the problem?

As above, but with your autostart entries?

Have you uninstalled either/both sound juicer and sound converter to see if either/both of these is causing the problem?

It would be good to narrow the problem down to the software that is causing it first.

it sounds like installing these packages pulled in some dependencies that resulted in compiz not working anymore.
