so new to Linux...im clueless..HELP!

Before anything : thanks for reading this.

I finally got the guts to install Red hat 8.0 Linux on my old:
AMD K 200 mhz
Serial mouse
1 hd ( hda) 3.2 gb
1 hd (hdb) 2.2 GB
128 mb SDRAM
8 mb Voodoo 2 Video card
Internal modem
this thing was top of the line 8 years ago..he he

well, my problem is: somehow my mouse was not recognized by Mrs anaconda and prompted me to default text mode, now when I turn on the computer, log in and put my password, everything goes fine except its only on text...(Im a visual person and frankly tough not intimidated by source code this thing is making me cower in a corner rocking back and forth trying to get to my happy place) and as it comes, Im iliterate on linux commands.

when I type "startx" gives me an error after 0 tries" and "no screens found"

so far what I know about linux is what I have read on the help file

any idea on how to make red hat 8 recognize my serial mouse ( M$ 2 buttons) and on how to get the X window system work?...I wanna know!!!!

any help on this 2 issues will be greatly appreciated.

looks like your using xfree as the x system, so heres how it works, you ahve to tell it about you screen video card, and mouse before you can start it, otherwise it doesent knwo what to do (its kinda stupid), ok so here ya are
type in
xf86config
youll get a bunch of questions, most you should be able to anwser , sence you a iliderate at linux comands ill asume your iliterate at the this to

when it asks you wrere your mouse is tpye
/dev/psaux
also when it asks if you want 3 mouse buton emulation say yes (this is just if you have only 2 buttons, makes it play nicly i think is the idea)

next youll need to know the max resolution your monitor and video card can suply, i think itll be 80x600, so when you get a list of nonsence (itll have screen resolutions, rates, and numbers, and look almost foren) pick #2 its called super vga, the next question should be about your refresh rates of you monitor, sence its so old pick #1 (my laptop is also about 8 years old and these setting work fine for it),

next should be what video card you got, itll ask if you want to veiw a list, type
yes
then itll giv you a list of card drivers, if you dont see your lsited press enter as that will giv you more options, if all else fails just pick the "vesa vga" option as that should work with all cards (you wont get anything fancy)

Ok...I think one of the issues is that the mouse is dead...will have to buy one ( just checked it with other machine and its bye bye..) was on storage for a couple of years...might be dust of who knows)

second, (I havent made any of the xfr86config stuff) but I will make a try as soon I get the new mouse

Thanks for the info...I will become a regular here.
