Sure it does

You copy it to a directory, maybe:
/usr/lib/win32

Check:
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/#installation
Quote:
Win32 codecs: If you plan to use MPlayer on x86 architecture, you will possibly need them. Download the Win32 codecs from our codecs page and install them to /usr/lib/win32 BEFORE compiling MPlayer, otherwise no Win32 support will be compiled!
Cool

you shouldn't need *ANY* other packages to get avi's to play, the built in ffmpeg codec pack can play any divx files around.

Aparently I needed this win32 stuff to get SOME Avis to play. I still get an error when opening AVI/ASF/WMV files, but is a much more user freindly error than than the exception / kernel errors I get which I don't even understand.
I don't want to compile Mplayer from scratch as its a pain in the behind to get it working as it stands, and compiling will only make my life worse.

Thanx for the replies guys
