So how do I install the Firefox 1.04 upgrade
 

Another real beauty this time form Mozilla. They've just released an updated version of a great browser but seemingly have totally overlooked the Linux Newbie totally - no inclusion of a read me file and no instructions on the download page re installation procedure.

I downloaded the Tar.gz file to desktop and decompressed it. and was about to run the installer - but have no idea where the original installation lies so I can overwrite it. Unlike windows where you can right click an Icon and trace the path of the containing folder, linux seems to offer no such luxury.

That seems to be one of Linux's greater achile's heels - file management. As a new user I'm finding impossible at times to find things like application folders and installation directories.

Can anyone help?

Thanks for that info........... Had already found some of these files but the whereis command seems pretty useful! However I did manage to extract the firefox-installation contents and have no idea where to install them to to overwrite the previous installation and to which the desktop shortcut will link. What I seemd to end up with were 2 versions of firefox. I really only want one as running 2 seems like a waste of space

hope you can offer further advice.

by now shouldn't that be in a yum or apt repository somewhere, I'd use that if you wanted an easy install. Otherwise, get it off of getfirefox.com

SUSE will release an updated version of it on their own.

I suspect so - are they generally quick with such updates?

You may have already installed it and not realized it if you used the SUSE RPM for Firefox. Most Distros don't upgrade their packages to newer versions, they instead backport the security fixes to the older versions without introducing new features. So, for instance, on my CentOS 4.0, I have gaim-1.2.1-6.el4 installed. This is basically Gaim 1.2.1 with the new security patches from Gaim 1.3.0 but without the new features. If I remember correctly, SUSE does the same thing. Have you ran YaST Online Update? Try running rpm -q firefox and tell me the output. Or have you already installed the Firefox from www.mozilla.org? (BTW, you should always remove the firefox RPM before installing the Firefox from www.mozilla.org)

I Just wanted to clarify that I doubt what I downloaded per se is a patch as such. I was trying to install themes to 1.03 version and Firefox told me I must upgrade to 1.04 to do so and took me to the download for the tar.gz. Having unzipped all the files to a firefox-installer folder on my desktop and run firexox-installer I got another firefox-installer file with the .exe and a whole pile of other files.

If you click the .exe here you get the new version and if you click the desktop icon you get 1.03.

I then entered the console and typed:

I opened all locations listed and in the containing folders the contents were nothing like those of the new firefox-installer folder. Therefore I could not replace contents as you might do in windows to patch an installation.

To date YaST 2 has not offered a patch and I'm sure when it does that it will patch the appropriate files in the appropriate directory(ies) but that the file contents will be similar to those originally installed as opposed to those in the tar.gz from Mozilla.

Maybe I'm wrong but I suspect this to be the case. Even with Mozilla's release notes they are not clear as to what a likely destination folder would be in linux /bin/, /usr/ or /lib/ or whatever so where are we supposed to install their download to /home/ , /Desktop/ ????

As mentioned I only want 1 version of it running and not 2. If anyone can help or shed more liht on the problem I'd appreciate your comments

I just upgraded to firefox 1.4 last night and since i am running MEPIS 3.3 , it was all incredibly EASY.
You NEVER mess with the file, You NEVER mess with the terminal. Synaptic makes all program
installation and upgrading a "walk in the park". One click, type in firefox,click again, it finds the program,
you click ok to go ahead, and it automatically does everything. Go have a beer and relax.
Mepis is a GODSEND !!
